Self test?

I asked a question earlier about a DeVille a/c system. It is a 98 model, and I had to remove the battery cable to get the a/c to start working. My question is, is there a way to get the eatc system to go into a selftest, to maybe pinpoint why it needed a reset? Does that year/model have a selftest feature and will it store a code? It just said low refrigerant-no a/c in the message center, but was full of refrigerant. Reset has fixed it so far, but.....any stored code would be a help!
