I have a dishwasher drainage question... is it too far from my sink?

So, we finally decided to run our dishwasher for the first time after living in this new apartment for a few months. It's my first time using one so I really don't know if something is wrong with it. There's a small drainage thing next to the sink and I think the water is suppose to drain out to the sink. However, when the water comes out, it squirts out and gets all over the kitchen counter. It seems to me that the water is not powerful enough to reach to the sink. (there's a 2-3 inch gap between that and the sink) Just wondering if something might be wrong with the dishwasher and/or what i should do with it....
